Men, women and children from all of the country are making the switch to gluten-free eating. The reasons why vary. Some think it’s a healthier way to live while it becomes a necessity for others who have been diagnosed with celiac disease. At first glance this may mean no more pizza, bread, pasta and even cookies. We’ve come a long way since the early days of gluten free living. There are now thousands of products and many thousand gluten-free recipes out there for you to enjoy. Here’s one of my favorites, for a delicious gluten free oatmeal cookie.
Gluten Free Oatmeal Cookies
* 1/2 cup margarine
* 1/2 cup light-brown sugar
* 1/4 cup regular sugar
* 1/2 tsp vanilla
* 3/4 cups gluten-free flour
* 1/2 tsp baking soda
* dash of table salt
* 1/2 tsp cinnamon
* 1 large egg
* 1/2 tsp xanthan gum
* 1 1/2 cups gluten free oats
* 1/2 cup raisins (or other dried fruit)
Start by preheating your oven to 350F. Soften the margarine either by sitting it out for 30 minutes or by sticking it in the microwave for a few seconds. Get out a large bowl. Add the butter and both types of sugar to it and use a hand-mixer to cream everything together. The egg and vanilla should be incorporated next. Take your time and keep blending until you have a smooth, creamy mixture.
Sift together the flour, soda, salt, cinnamon and gum in another bowl. Give those dry ingredients a good stir, then work it into the egg mixture. Finish the batter by adding the oats and raisins and mixing everything together.
Get a large cookies sheet and drop the cookies on, using approximately one tbsp of batter for each. I like to work with two large spoons to do this, but a melon scooper or small ice cream scooper work as well.
Bake the cookies for 10 to 12 minutes. They will be golden brown when they are done. Let the cookies cool for a good five minutes on the sheet, then move them to a wire rack. The cool cookies can then be stored in an airtight container.
This recipe yields two dozen oatmeal cookies.
Of course you don’t have to bake all your cookies and other gluten-free treats from scratch. You can get all kinds of baking mixes and even finished gluten free products at local grocery stores and online at websites that specialize in gluten-free products. They are the perfect alternative. There are even some premade cookies that you can purchase that taste pretty decent.
In short, you do not have to give up on your favorite treats when you have to switch to eating gluten free.
And now, I would like to invite you to read about another delicious and good-for-you recipe. This one is for quinoa muffins which you can make gluten-free by baking them with gluten-free flour. And here are more quinoa recipes for you.

On a hot day I’m usually ready for a nice cold treat by the time the afternoon rolls around. A yummy option is a frozen fruit smoothie made with plenty of strawberries, bananas, some low-fat vanilla yogurt and a splash of skim milk. It tastes good and is actually good for me. Let’s take a look at what makes this beverage so healthy.
The Frozen Fruit - I probably don’t have to tell you that fruit is good for you. It is full of fiber and of course vitamins. It’s also beneficial to use frozen instead of fresh fruit. This fruit is picked at its peak, when it is perfectly ripened and has the most nutrients. Some experts say that consuming frozen fruits and vegetables is even better than fresh, since the fresh produce we pick up at the grocery store is already several days old. Remember it takes time to pick it, process it and ship it to your grocery store. In that time, many of the nutrients (and vitamins) start to go away. Using frozen fruit in your smoothie makes it even healthier.
Milk and Yogurt - Next we’ll take a closer look at the dairy ingredients for our frozen fruit smoothies. I am talking about skim milk and non-fat yogurt. They are full of calcium that helps keep your bones strong. If you are a woman, you definitely want to take advantage of this. As we get older our bones are depleted of calcium and we have to replenish it or risk osteoporosis as we get older. For the same reason, smoothies are also healthy for kids. Since their bones are growing, they need the extra calcium for sure.
Yogurt as well as milk contain quite a bit of protein which helps your body maintain muscle mass. It is very important to get plenty of protein when you are trying to lose weight or most of your weight loss will be in muscle instead of body fat.
Let’s Talk Hydration - Smoothies also help us stay well hydrated because of the liquid from both from the milk (or juice if you prefer) and from the fruit itself. During the heat of the summer months, we tend to lose more water than usual and without it your body just can’t function. Smoothies are my favorite way to help us stay hydrated - in addition to drinking plenty of water.
The fact that they are frozen also helps our bodies cool down. And that’s just one of the many reasons why drinking a frozen fruit smoothie is a good idea. By far my favorite though is the fact that they taste absolutely delicious and help fill me up with just a few calories. All this makes it the perfect summer treat.
Blend the ultimate fruit smoothie with this strawberry smoothie recipe. It’s fun and easy and you can find more ideas for making frozen fruit smoothie here.

The Many Good Reasons For Creating Your Own Cleaners
Ready to learn more about homemade laundry detergent? There are quite a few advantages of doing this instead of buying commercially available detergents. What are you using right now to clean your clothes? More than likely it is one of the following products:
- Purex
- Tide
- Gain
- Cheer
Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with using them, but I am saying that it can be quite beneficial to make your own homemade version.
It’s More Frugal
Let’s start with the main reason most of start making our own detergent. Homemade versions are quite a bit cheaper. Depending on what detergent you buy right now, and whether or not you stick with the actual brand or a store-brand version. You can save between 20 and 50 cents per load of laundry. That may not look like a lot of cash, but just think of how many times you run your washing mashine each month or even each year. The average family does about 2 loads per day. Let’s say you save just $0.25 per load. That’s a saving of well over 180 dollars each year you make your own detergent.
It’s Better For Your Skin
While those savings are certainly appreciated, the main reason I stay with the homemade kind, is because it gives me control over what goes into the detergent. Go read the label of the detergent sitting in your laundry room right now. Most of it probably doesn’t make much sense. Detergents you pick up at the store have quite a few preservatives and other chemicals in them. Add to that the various artificial fragrances that are added and it is no wonder many of us, particularly young children are having allergic reactions to clothing washed in regular detergent. By making your own laundry soap, you decide what goes in there and most recipes call for nothing more than soap, borax and washing soda. It makes it a lot gentler on your child’s (and your own) skin.
Ecologically Friendly
For the same reason homemade laundry detergent is also more ecologically friendly. In the last section I mentioned additives and chemicals that are added to commercial soap. These are harmful to the environment as they make it into the water systems. Just by making your own laundry soap, you are contributing to the environment and are helping save the earth. This may not be a big concern for you, but it is nice to know that you can do your part just by making detergent.

Eye Exams Explained: What Doctors Are Looking For
Eye Exams Explained – What the Doctors are Looking for
Do you get nervous when you think about going to the eye doctor? Most people think that compared to a general practitioner visit, a trip to the eye doctor is a piece of cake. However, there are some people and children who get a little freaked out when it comes to getting an eye exam. Most of the anxiety comes from not knowing exactly what the eye professional is doing or what they are looking for. They sit you in a darken room, ask you to read letters no one could possibly see, and then push a large contraption in front of your face and ask you to look through it. It can be intimidating and alarming to some. Eye exams should not be something you fear however. If you want to know exactly what’s going on during the exam, read these explanations before your visit. You will feel better knowing exactly what to expect.
One of the first tests your doctor will perform during your eye exam is the retinoscopy. This is where the doctor dims the lights in the room and asks you to stare at a large letter board that almost always starts with a large “E”. When you are looking toward the “E”, the doctor will shine a light at your eye and often will flip a lens filled machine in front of your eye as well. The way the light reflects from your eye tells the doctor your prescription.
Next, the doctor will perform a refraction test, which is the portion of the test that will determine your exact prescription. A phoropter is placed in from of your eye and you will be asked to distinguish between many different lens choices. The doctor will likely ask you which lenses appear clearer than others. This whole process helps determine your level of astigmatism, helps figure out if you are farsighted or nearsighted, and will detect presbyopia.
A glaucoma test is often performed as well at your eye exam. This test has several different variations. Your doctor will probably use the “air” test, which is technically called the non-contact tonometer. The test measures the pressure in your eye, which can tell the doctor whether or not you have glaucoma or not. You will sit in a chair and rest your chin in a rest. You will push your forehead forward against a forehead rest. Next the machine will shine a light at your eye and you will feel a small puff of air in your air. This is a painless test. Most people are only startled slightly by the puff of air. Many do not even feel it however and will only hear the noise that came with the puff of air.
When you get an eye exam, the doctor will not only be able to tell if you need a prescription or not, but they will also be able to see other things about your health. The eye doctor will notice if there are any irregularities in your eye, other than vision. They also can often detect warning signs of high blood pressure and diabetes. Getting an eye exam can help you see better as well as alert you to any other problems you may be unaware of.
If you have children who are a bit afraid of the eye doctor, consider calling ahead to talk with the nurse or doctor about your child’s anxiety. Most doctors will have special charts they use for children, especially if your child is not old enough to read letters. They will not likely do the glaucoma test either, so you won’t have to worry about your child being startled by that portion of the visit. Most often the doctor will show them pictures and have them point in order to get the results they need. Explaining to your child exactly what will occur during the visit is the best way to lessen their anxiety about the trip. Keep in mind that adults can also have anxiety when it comes to the eye doctor, so don’t feel bad if you are one of them. Just stay calm and know that this is one of the few medical exams in life that is completely painless. There is absolutely nothing to be afraid of and better sight to gain .You can find more information to improve eyesight here
