What A Writer’s Day Is Really Like

Ah, the carefree and creative life of a writer! Alas, if you think that’s how it is, you’re sadly mistaken. Far more writers are in a state of constant panic, racing against deadlines. They’re not sitting down and deep and meaningful works of literature. More than likely, they’re short articles about how to get rid of acne or something else that means nothing to them.

Freelancers often have a slightly better deal, at least with regards to what they write about. At least some of the time, they can find assignments on subjects they know and care about. On the other hand, there’s not job security in freelancing.

Every now and then, though, a freelance writer gets the opportunity to write a series of articles or even a book about something that is of interest to them and actually get paid for it. A female writer may get commissioned to write the content for a jewelry website. For several weeks or even months, she’ll be able to immerse herself in jewelry as she writes eloquently about rhodium earrings and other things she loves.

There was a time when online was a great way to make money. The economic slowdown has changed that, though. Now it seems like everyone is looking for work online. Even university lecturers and professional journalists are moonlighting. An extra twenty dollars for a few hours evening work beats nothing and is certainly a step up from watching TV to divert your mind from your troubles.

That said, there aren’t many writers, especially work from home writers, who would willingly give it up in exchange for a well paying day job. You get used to the freedom of working from home, even if at the end of the day, you’ve worked longer hours for less pay.

Writers love to write. Even when they can’t pour their hearts and souls into creative works, they love the challenge of words. When you’re a man who has been commissioned to write a series of articles about hobo handbags, the words don’t come naturally. But when you knuckle down and get to work, you have to find an angle that makes you enthusiastic about them and translate that enthusiasm into words that will sell the product.

There’s a great deal of satisfaction that comes from doing this. Aside from the obvious fact that your completed work is going to feed you for a little while, there’s the satisfaction of having completed your job successfully.

The writer’s life is rarely, if ever, as romantic as some people make it out to be, but then, what job is ever always satisfying? At least, as a freelance writer, you get to do what you love and don’t have to worry about your boss.
